Onaway advances to regional final against conference rival

        Dylan Szymoniak struck out 15 batters and Luke Lovelave crushed a two RBI triple to break a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning and bring in the game-winning runs and send Onaway to a 7-2 win over Alcona in Wednesday’s regional semifinal game at Rogers City.
       It sets up a Ski Valley Conference showdown with Inland Lakes in Saturday’s regional championship game at Harbor Springs and gives the 2024 Onaway baseball team a chance to win the school’s first regional title in the sport. 
       Already, head coach Rick Price’s Cardinals have had an impact on the history books because Wednesday’s win was the second regional win in school history. The last regional win was in 2018 at Maple City Glen Lake, a 5-1 win over Mio, before Gaylord St. Mary brought an end to the tournament run.
      The winner of the 10 a.m. Onaway vs. Inland Lakes regional final game takes on the winner of the Norway vs. Rudyard regional final set to start at 12:30 p.m. The winners play at 3 p.m. at Harbor Springs. The winner of the day advances to the state semifinal to on the campus of Michigan State University June 14 at 11:30 a.m. The state finals are set for June 15 at 2:30 p.m. at MSU.
