Knitting is not a lost art at RC Baptist Academy

If you ever thought knitting was a lost art or something from the past, ask members of the ?Knit Knats,? a knitting class offered by Sally Warwick at the Rogers City Baptist Academy. Members of the class are not only learning to knit but are making knit hats for newborns which will be donated to Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Sally learned to knit from her mother, who learned to knit from her mother. Sally was teaching her daughter Kelly and granddaughter Sarah Wang to knit when the idea popped into her head and she asked permission to teach a knitting class at the school.

Now the once-a-week class is filled with youngsters from grades one through seven and even some of the mothers have been showing up to learn the craft. Sally made each of the girls a tote bag with their names on them to carry knitting needles and yarn projects.

?AT FIRST I was concerned about the younger girls,? Sally said, ?but they just picked up the technique so quickly.? Even Sally?s husband Paul is interested in learning to knit, and comes along to the class once in a while to help out.

?I do tatting, you know,? Paul said, as he held on to one of the grandbabies for Kelly as she helped the knitters. ?Did you know that in other countries guys knit all the time?? Sally asked. ?They go to the pub and bring their knitting and wear the stuff they make.?

Sally is assisted by her daughter Kelly and Fern Arkwo

od, her 83-year-old mother. Arkwood lived on a farm as a child and would card the sheep?s wool and spin it into yarn for knitting. Grandma Marion Arkwood, Fern?s mother-in-law, lived to be 103 years old and used to demonstrate spinning wool at Greenfield Village on occasion.

AFTER LEARNING the basics, the RCBA students started their first project, the baby hats for newborns, using special non-allergenic soft yarn, specifically for babies. Some of the students have already completed three or four hats and others are working to finish their first one. All are mesmerized by the craft and work hard to make progress.

Sally?s dream to carry on the learning of an age-old craft is being realized…knit one, purl two, at a time.
