Members of the Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education met in closed session Monday following their regular monthly meeting for the purpose of evaluating superintendent Ed Schultz. The superintendent was evaluated by individual board members and a consensus was reached on a total of 32 areas of performance.

Three ratings were utilized during the evaluation process, according to a district press release. Schultz was rated ?acceptable? in 21 areas of performance, ?needs improvement? in eight areas, while the remaining three categories were found to be ?not applicable or not observed.?

Areas requiring improvement included visibility/approachability, development of staff evaluation tools/oversight, more staff involvement, improvement in communication with staff, increased involvement in budget recommendations and enhancement of curriculum.

Schultz is completing his first year of a three-year contract.

The board, in other bu

siness, completed a self-evaluation, which focused on 10 areas considered essential to the governance of any school district. The board found itself to be ?acceptable? in eight of the 10 categories, including governance, policy, meetings, finance, personnel, negotiations, student services and community relations.

The first of two areas requiring improvement and focus was identified: establishing criteria for instruction and approving/monitoring curriculum as well as promoting high standards for instruction. The second category dealt with development of a use policy for facilities/food service and transportation.

The board of education and superintendent will establish goals for the 2003-04 school year during their regular meeting May 12.
