Sheriff’s department continues investigation of December 15 accident which claimed a life

The Presque Isle County Sheriff Department continues its investigation of the fatal head-on crash which claimed the life of 64-year-old Doris Baily of Onaway and sent members of another family to three different hospitals in the state. The condition of Erin Schoolcraft, 8, who suffered serious head injuries in the accident, is improving at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Schoolcraft, who turned 8 years-old two days after the accident, has undergone two major brain surgeries, according to family members, but remains in a coma-like state, they said.

Mary Arntz, 70, of Onaway, remains in the intensive care unit of Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.

Deborah Hayner, 47, of Atlanta, is no longer hospitalized.

According to the sheriff’s department, the accident occured one-tenth of a mile east of County Line Road Demember 15. Bailey lost control of her vehicle and crossed the centerline, striking the eastbound vehicle driven by Hayner. A sheriff’s department spokesman said “weather was definite factor” in the accident.
