School bus accident sends child to the hospital

Young student struck by bus An Early Childhood Education student was transported to Community Memorial Hospital in Cheboygan Thursday (Jan. 9) after being struck by an Onaway Area Schools bus. According to superintendent Bob Szymoniak, who had received preliminary details of the accident, the bus driver made a stop to pick up the student, and not seeing any one waiting, proceeded to pull away.

Impact with the bus occurred as the driver was leaving the bus stop, Szymoniak said. The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Onaway Area Ambulance transported the student to Cheboygan.

The Onaway Police Department is investigating the accident. Called to the scene were officers from the Michigan State Police and the Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department, who specialize in reconstructing accident scenes.

Szymoniak said the bus driver has been ?suspended with pay, pending completion of the investigation.?
