Sheriff?s department finalizes numbers from year

The 2002 activity report from the Presque Isle County Sheriff?s Department shows mixed results. For example, complaints were down, but police runs were up. Criminal sexual conduct cases were down, but breakings and enterings and larcenies were up.

The numbers also indicate alcohol-related incidents remain a problem in the county, with no decreases in three categories.

ONE REASON why breakings and enterings were up was because of a rash of break-ins reported in the Presque Isle area this past spring. B & E?s went from 85 in 2001 to 91 in 2002. The value of property recovered also was up, from $12,070 to nearly $20,000.

More than $7,000 in items were recovered last month alone. Only $1,460 of property was recovered in December 2001. There were six aggravated assaults this past year compared to four the year before. Non-aggravated assaults decreased from 81 to 72. Also showing increases were malicious destruction of property complaints, property damage reports, traffic stops (1,695 to 1,443), the hours

on police runs, patrol hours and total miles logged by officers. Deputies and high-ranking members of the force logged over a quarter-of-a-million miles, up nearly 20,000 miles from 2001.

WHILE TRAFFIC stops increased by 252, there were 15 less traffic citations issued compared to the year before. Hunters who say there are not many deer in the woods also can claim that there are less on the roads. Car/deer accidents were down by nearly 50, from 424 to 375. December?s numbers backed that trend, slipping from 32 accidents to 29. Injury accidents were down, but alcohol-related crashes remained steady at 22.

Operating under the influence violations were up slightly from 42 to 47 and liquor violations also were up. Snowmobile/ATV/boat accidents were down from 16 to nine. Sadly, fatal accidents for 2002 were the same as the year before, with four people losing their lives on county roadways. There were no homicides or arsons.
