Cardinal volleyball teams will host parent’s night Wednesday

The volleyball season is winding down, with the final home meet of the season scheduled Wednesday at 6 p.m. The JV and varsity Cards will play Joburg that evening, which will be parents’ night at OHS. The varsity squad has been playing better of late, having defeated Rudyard Monday in the U.P., 15-3, 15-13, and 12-15. Onaway made only two service errors all evening, a key to the victory.

“The girls played awesome all night,” said Rob Peterman, who coached the squad because his wife was ill. “”We could have easily won the third game as well.

“The girls knew their positions, and they played them well. We ran pre-set plays and made some big kills on them. And we did a nice job on our serve, with just the two errors.”

Samantha Tignanelli was the Cards leading server, tallying 15 points, four of them on aces. Jamie Grainger served nine points, and Holly Nolde served seven. Michelle Ellenberger had two kills and Sarah Wolgast had a block.

Earlier in the evening, the JV Cards dropped its match with Rudyard, losing games one (12-15) and two (2-15) before rebounding to claim game three (15-13). Stephanie Porter led the way for the younger Red Birds, serving 13 points, five of them via the ace, and recording four digs. Last Saturday, the varsity netters participated in a tournament in Ellsworth, dropping two to the host (7-15, 7-15) and St. Ignace (13-15, 8-15), splitting with Algoma (8-15, 15-7), and sweeping Bear Lake (15-10, 15-11). That effort placed Onaway in bracket play against St. Ignace, with the teams playing one game to 21 and the winner advancing. The Saints won 21-10 to end the Cards’ day.

Grainger served 18 points on the day, Tignanelli served 13, with five aces, and Amanda Bliemeister served 12, with five aces. Nolde and Tignanelli each had five kills. Wolgast had seven blocks, and Ellenberger had four. “We didn’t play as a team,” said coach Tina Peterman. “That has been one of our biggest problems – too much arguing and worrying about what everyone else is doing.” On February 6, both Cardinal squads traveled to Pellston. The varsity fell 0-15 and 5-15 before defeating the Hornets (ranked second in Class D) 17-15 in the third game.

Kelley Seeley served six points, while Wolgast and Tignanelli served four apiece. Tignanelli had six kills and five digs, Wolgast had three blocks, and Bobbi Jo Theodore had five digs.

The JV Cards were swept by Pellston, falling 11-15, 5-15, and 6-15. Beth Couture served eight points, two of them aces, while Porter served six points, three vi

a the ace.

On February 5, in a game rescheduled due to a snowstorm a few days earlier, the varsity and JV Cardinals hosted rivals Rogers City and Inland Lakes. The varsity fell to the Bulldogs 9-15, 15-4, 9-15, and lost to the Hurons 2-15, 8-15, 4-15. Nolde served 17 points, seven on aces, and had five kills. Bliemeister served eight points (four aces), and Seeley had five kills. The JV defeated the Bulldogs 15-9, 9-15, 15-6, but fell to the Hurons 15-10, 6-15, 3-15. Megan Waldie served 19 points, and had six kills and 17 digs. Porter had four kills and nine digs. Couture had six aces, and Rachel Reece had five.

The varsity Cardinals play in a tournament at Bellaire Saturday, and travel to Newberry on Thursday. The Straits Area Conference meet is at Alcona a week from Saturday.
