Onaway netters sweep through Alanson

The OHS varsity volleyball team swept a trio of games from Ski Valley Conference foe Alanson last Thursday, giving up a total of only 12 points in winning 15-6, 15-2, and 15-4. Bobbie Jo Theodore served a team-high 13 points, including seven aces, to pace Onaway, while Samantha Tignanelli served 12 points, including nine aces.

Michelle Ellenberger served seven points, five of them aces, and Holly Nolde served five points, with three aces. Though there weren’t many long rallies, there were a few chances at spikes. Tignanelli and Kelly Seeley had three kills apiece as Onaway capitlaized on the few opportunities it had. Most of the points, however, were pretty short.

“It was a pretty quick night,” said coach Tina Peterman. “Alanson didn’t do too much setting or volleying, so it’s hard to get an indicator of where we’re at with this game. “Overall, we played pretty well, though I don’t think we quite played to our potential. Everybody got a lot of playing time, though, which is a good thing at this level.” Jamie Grainger is the team’s leading server at 96 percent, followed by Nolde at 93 percent, and Seeley and Lindsey Herremans, both at 90 percent. The team is getting better, said Peterman.

“And they’re fun to coach,” she said. “I hope we can get stronger as the season comes to an

end.”

The JVs also swept the Vikings, winning 15-2, 15-3, 15-8. Like their varsity counterparts, it didn’t take the JV long to defeat the home team, as Alanson struggled to make rallies. Debra Osantowski led the Cardinals with 12 service points, seven on aces. Keri Hoeft had eight points with three aces, while Beth Couture had five points with two aces. The freshman netters also saw some action, though they didn’t fare as well. Onaway lost to Pickford (1-15, 7-15) and St. Ignace (15-11, 2-15, 15-17) in a tri-meet on January 27. Echoe Bouta served 15 points on the evening to lead the Red Birds.

Two days later, OHS fell to Gaylord 9-15, 10-15, 5-15, 10-15, 5-15. Laura Willey served 12 points, while Morgan McDowell served eight in the loss. The varsity netters next play Saturday at a tourney Ellsworth. The varsity and JV are at Rudyard Monday, and the varsity is at Bellaire on February 15.
