Shipping season begins at Calcite

The Cason J. Callaway, in operation since 1952, is one of the first to leave the Port of Calcite with a load this month. Here, her crew backs the great ship out of the slip.

Loads are a little lighter since the water level is a foot-and-a-half shallower than a year ago, according to Carmeuse Lime & Stone operations manager Ray LeClair.

“They are being a little more cautious, and not getting loaded to where they were last year,” said LeClair. The first freighter of the season was American Mariner on April 5.
