County has six at individual wrestling finals

FORD FIELD DETROIT 5:10 P.M. MARCH 6–First round action is underway at Ford Field in Detroit in the MHSAA individual wrestling tournament. Managing editor Pete Jakey is at the event and reports that two wrestlers won in the first round of action.

Rogers City’s Anthony Paull (36-11), wrestling at 160 won an 8-4 decision over Blaine Mitchell (33-9) of Carson City to move into the second round. He lost by pin at 3:35  to Trenton Holden (43-1) of Grass Lake, who previously defeated Grady Iobe (37-17) of Union City by a 32-second pin. He now faces Spencer Konz (36-4) of Clinton later this evening. 

Onaway’s Matthew Grant (26-1) , the number-one seed at 140, pinned Korbin Klaus of Hesperia in 44 seconds. In the second round just before 5 p.m., he lost 4-2 in overtime to Garrett Iobe (49-8) of Union City. He now faces A.J. Baxter (50-7) of Clinton. The best he could finish, should he win four more matches, would be third place.

Four other wrestlers from the county didn’t have such good results, losing their first match of the day to fall into the elimination bracket.

In the first round, Onaway’s Seth Enos (22-17) lost by a pin at 4:30 to Hunter Underwood (31-6) of Gobles at 152. He pinned Noah Entire ( 27-11) of Westland in his second match.

Brendan Fenstermaker (27-11) wrestling at 145 for Onaway, was pinned at 1:19 by top-seeded Skyler Crespo (50-1) of Mendon in the first round. Fenstermaker was eliminated in the next round, losing a 6-2 decision to Brenden Kurtze (42-9) of Lakeview. 

Onaway’s Teddy Peters (17-4) was pinned at 4:29 by Robert Patterson (33-7) of Springport at 135. He took a major decision 11-0 over Josh Collins (29-11) of Hemlock in round two.

Rogers City’s Clayton Henry (37-9), wrestling at 171, was defeated 11-4 by Jared Checkley (42-3) of Decatur in the first round. He defeated Josh Pasco of (37-3) of Brown City (8-7) to more on to a match with the loser of the Hunter Belew (42-4) of Delta vs. Austin Priver (41-8) of Pine River match. 

 The quarterfinals with Grant and Paull will follow later today.
