Grace P. Mertz

Grace P. Mertz, 95, of Hawks passed away Wednesday afternoon, May 6, 2020, at MidMichigan Medical Center in Alpena.

The daughter of Charles and Hattie (Braun) Elowski was born September 27, 1924 in Belknap, she was the sixth child in the family of nine children.  

Beloved wife of Ervin they married November 9, 1946 in Alpena. Together they were able to celebrate 65 years of marriage.  Where he walked Grace followed. They made their home on the Mertz family farm in Hawks, and were honored to be the Grand Marshals in 2001 during the Hawks Spring Fling parade.

In her younger years she enjoyed riding her bike.  Grace loved to sew she enjoyed making her families clothes, and crocheting afghans, and doll clothing. All of her life from a young girl she loved to sing.  She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid in Hawks.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn (Karen) of Boyne Falls and Brad of Rogers City; a daughter, Janis (Reverend Michael) Schaedig of Cheboygan; grandchildren, Brenda (Jerry) Wodek, Amy (John) Lopez, Lisa (Dustin) Provest, Jennifer (Kyle) Smith, Rebecca Schaedig and John (Amber) Schaedig; great-grandchildren, Kiana, Timothy James, Logan, Lukas, Blaise, Jett, Adrienne, Madison and Christoper; a sister, Audrey Wenzel; a

nd a brother, Norman Elowski.  

She was preceded in death by her husband Ervin September 9, 2012; a daughter, Susan in 1947; a son, Carl in 1971; two sisters, Mildred Burns and Gertrude Elowski; and four brothers, Harvey, Howard, Wilbert and Shirley.

A private graveside service will take place at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Hawks with the Rev. Dr. Jack Ferguson officiating and a memorial service to celebrate her life will take place at a later date. Online condolences can be sent to hentkowskifuneral.com.
