Vickie Lou Abbe

Vickie Lou Abbe, 68, died at home, unexpectedly, Sunday, June 16, 2024. Born August 27, 1955, she was the daughter of Lyle and Grace (Baker) Preston.

A lifelong resident, Vickie was born and raised in Onaway. She graduated from Onaway High School in the class of 1973 and continued to be a proud Onaway Cardinal her entire life. Throughout her working years, Vickie worked as a waitress and bartender at several local establishments including, Jan’s Donut Shop, Woodwinds in Millersburg, and Radio Tavern, but her favorite job was bartending at the Tower Tavern where she worked for many years. Tending bar suited Vickie quite well as she was friendly and could easily strike up a conversation with her customers. With her feisty personality, she could hold her own, having no problem handling any situation.

Vickie loved music, especially classic old country by legends like Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. Just as much as she loved music, Vickie loved to dance. When there was a band playing, she could always be found on the dance floor. She enjoyed flower gardening and thrift shopping.

Vickie could spend an entire day looking for good deals at garage sales and shopping second-hand stores.

She absolutely loved going out to eat, but it was a “Vickie thing” to complain about her food, even though she really enjoyed it!

It would be difficult to find someone more patriotic than Vickie Abbe. She loved celebrating the Fourth of July, seeing the parade, and watching fireworks. She dressed in red, white and blue with her nails painted to match and adorned herself in patriotic jewelry. There wasn’t any place she’d rather be than Onaway as she loved her hometown. Straight to the point, Vickie was sassy and not afraid to speak her mind. She was a loyal friend and loved to have a good t

ime.

Vickie is survived by her mother, Grace Preston, of Onaway; daughters, Sheila (Jason) Thorpe of Lewiston and Sarah (Todd) Hopp of Onaway; sons, Thomas Moran of Bliss and Jess (Erica) Preston of Sault Ste. Marie; grandchildren, Austin Moran, Tom Leach, James Eaton, Elizabeth (Carl) Moore, Russell Leach, and Hayden, Mya and Forest Preston; as well as her brother, Dan “Tom” Preston, and nephew, Chris Preston, both of Onaway; and many good friends. Vickie was preceded in death by her father, Lyle Preston.

A luncheon and life celebration will be held at the Allis Township Hall at 2 p.m. today (Thursday June 20). Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a contribution in memory of Vickie to her family (Sarah Hopp) to be donated to the Onaway Fireworks Fund.
