Donald “Don” Ray Crooks

Donald “Don” Ray Crooks, 76, of Millersburg, died at home Sunday morning, August 10, 2025. The son of Richard Glawe and Helen Crooks, Don was born in Onaway January 4, 1949. Two influential people in Don’s life were his aunt and uncle, Anna and John Tober, whom he lived with in Ocqueoc and who raised him, and his sisters as their own. Blessed with 58 years of marriage, Don married Lois Marie Whaley at the Millersburg Methodist Church April 1, 1967.

Throughout his life, Don worked in various jobs, including driving truck and working in the woods cutting timber, however, he truly found his niche when he became a landscaper. He went into the landscaping business for himself with most of his clients being in Petoskey and the surrounding area. With his creativity and love of gardening, Don truly enjoyed his work.

A lifelong resident of northern Michigan, Don grew up hunting and fishing, but his passion was gardening. Each summer he grew the most amazing vegetable garden with more than enough harvest for he and Lois, as well as plenty to share with family and friends.

He also helped Lois maintain the beautiful flower gardens in their yard. He was a humble man who found happiness in watching the birds at the feeder outside his window, seeing the deer and other critters as they passed through his yard, and going for long rides in the country.

An avid reader, Don most often read to learn about things he was interested in and glean information on topics that intrigued him. He was a record keeper with calendars full of data he collected each day. He tracked the weather, including temperature and precipitation, as well as other things going on in the world. Don loved watching old movies with wholesome storylines and moral lessons.

Don was a quiet, unpretentious man with a dry sense of humor. He made people laugh with his humorous stories, witty observations, and subtle one-liners. He was hardworking, compassionate and kind.  Don’s greatest love was for his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time

with his family. With two of his sons living out of state, Don was blessed, and so happy, to have all of his family together for a good visit just a few weeks ago.

Don leaves his wife, Lois, of Millersburg; three sons, John (Lori) of New Hampshire, Robert (Angie) of Cheboygan and Edward (Gadice) of Maine; and his grandchildren, Curtis, Bree, Trace, Brock, Jude, Jess, Miel and Brody. Don was preceded in death by his sisters, Bonnie Zinke, Margo Vizina and his twin, Donna Schieb; a brother, John Crooks; his aunt and uncle, Anna and John Tober; and his parents.

Cremation has taken place and Don will be remembered by his family privately. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Don to McLaren Home Care and Hospice.
