Shirley Ann Hughes

Shirley Ann Hughes, 84, of Middletown, Ohio, and longtime resident of Ocqueoc, lost her battle with novel coronavirus (COVID-19) after a one-week hospital stay December 27, 2020. She was born October 26, 1936 in Detroit, the daughter of Joseph Melville and Bernice Elizabeth (Michalski) Monford.

Shirley graduated from Northeastern High School in Detroit and went on to Michigan State University to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education. She married Raymond “Ray” Arthur Hughes in 1960 in Grosse Pointe.

Shirley loved to dance and to joke around with people. Although her memory started to fail her toward the end of her life due to dementia, she was always moving around and never liked

to sit still for long periods.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Ray in 2000.  She is survived by her daughter, Karen (Jim) Berry of Middletown; and sons, Michael (Hana) of the Czech Republic and John in Franklin, Ohio; four grandchildren, Kimberly (Tom) Mahler, Jennifer (Todd) Schumacher, Nicole (Tomas) Kadlec and Jakub (Jana) Kotrba; and six great-grandchildren.

Shirley’s cremated remains will be buried later in the summer of 2021 at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Rogers City. 

Those who wish to remember Shirley in a special way may give gifts in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or to the Arthritis Foundation.
