The Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor is awarded to public safety officers who have shown exceptional courage in the effort to save or protect human life.

Officer Bruce Collins of the Rogers City Police Department received the honor during a ceremony at Rogers City City Hall in a packed council chambers.

In attendance were Collin’s family, fellow members of the police department, along with the woman whose life he saved: Lana Lijewski and her daughter Baylee.

Both women were in a vehicle that plunged into the water at the Rogers City Marina boat ramp on the evening after an out-of-control trip through town.

“It is with the highest respect and deepest gratitude that I formally recognize your extraordinary courage and selfless service to our community,” police chief Jamie Meyer said at the podium. “On Oct. 13th 2025, you demonstrated exceptional bravery in the face of imminent danger, acting decisively to protect the lives of others without regard for your own personal safety.”

Bruce swam 40 yards through the frigid waters of the marina to the spot where the vehicle was at to render aid to Lana Lijewski, who at that time was unresponsive and helpless.

“In that critical moment, you displayed not only remarkable skill and composure, but also an unwavering commitment to the oath you swore to uphold,” Meyer continued. “In recognition of your heroism, it is my honor to present you with the medal of valor.”

The chief said it is the highest commendation his department can bestow.

“The award symbolizes our profound appreciation for your courage, professionalism and dedication to the people we serve” Meyer said. “Your actions will be remembered as a testament to the strength of character and sense of duty that define the very best in our profession.”

Bruce’s wife Rachel pinned the medal of valor on her husband’s lapel and their son, Emmet, placed the neck ribbon with the medal of valor around his neck. That was followed by a standing ovation by everyone in the room, including members of the football team he coached last fall.

“There were several people out there that night,” said Bruce, “Thank God, everybody was where they needed to be from A.P. Profit, Erik Nadolsky, to my partner Jack Ryan, to the county deputies that arrived, EMS (emergency medical services) and the fire department, boaters in the slip. Without them being there, it could have been a way worse outcome and I was just a piece of the puzzle and I am very thankful it turned out as well as it did.”

“I cannot thank you enough,” Lana said at the end of the ceremony with her daughter standing next to her in tears.

“Officer Collins, thank you for pointing out that there were many people involved,” said mayor Scott McLennan. “You did risk your life, but you had people there that cared that were all involved in the lifesaving effort.”
