RC track piles up many firsts at Newberry

The track season is quickly winding down to the finish line, with the final Rogers City meet scheduled May 27 in Cheboygan. At the Newberry meet last Thursday, the girls came home with four firsts and the boys with three. In the girls? events, Lauren Fairbanks took first in the 3200m run (12:14) and Lacey Kreft stepped over the finish line just seconds later in (12:19) for second place. Fairbanks also was first in the 400m dash (1:02.2), improving her own record by a smidgen and proving she can run the short and fast races as well as the distance runs.

Kreft also was second in the 1600m run with 5:49. Charity Lewis, a senior, is the other Huron girl piling up first place medals, taking firsts in both the discus (106?7?) and the shot put (29?9.5?). In the boys? events, Tony Fleming flew over the high jump at 6?2? for first place, and teammate Kyle Greene took second with his 5?8? jump. Greene also took firsts in the discus (138?5?) and the shot put (49?9?), upping his previous attempts in the shot by more than a foot.

Fleming was fourth in the 200m dash (26.0) and Smuda ran the 3200m run in (11:02).

IN THE JUNIOR HIGH meet at St. Ignace, Paula Vogelheim took fourth place in the shot put (31?10?). In the boys? events, Jesse Smuda ran the 1600m run in 5:38 and the relay team of Smuda, Chris Windy, Mike Mierzwinski, and Eric Kieliszewski ran the 1600m relay in 4:51. The varsity track team will participate at the St. Ignace SAC meet Tuesday.
