Numbers continue to be a problem for OHS wrestling

Onaway’s final home meet of the year resulted in a pair of losses. One was a 69-6 defeat against a very strong Petoskey squad. The other was 42-36 to Hale. In the latter, the Cardinals won all six matches wrestled between the schools, but were forced to give up 42 points for seven open weight classes (one weight class featured a double void).

Onaway has yet to field a wrestler lighter than 135 pounds this season. This means the Cards usually spot their opponents a 30-0 lead before sending an athlete to the mat. Winning matches against Hale were Scott Campbell (135 pounds), Eric Behm (145), Brandon McCarthy (152), Kevin Cole (189), Larry Rhein (215), and David Havel (275). All six Cardinals won via the pin, with Campbell, McCarthy, Cole, and Havel pinning their opponents in under a minute. Rhein’s pin came in his first match of the season, as he is fighting his way back from injury.

Only Cole won a match against the Northmen, sticking his man in just 26 seconds at 189. The Northmen also rolled through Hale, winning that match 72-12.

Onaway next wrestles after the Holiday break.
