Hurons take second at St. Ignace

Fresh from their defeat of Alpena, the Rogers City wrestlers earned runner-up honors at the St. Ignace Invitational last Saturday on the strength of six individual championships. It was Rogers City?s first weekend tournament of the season, which was won by Munising with 180 points. The Mustangs were followed by the Hurons with 159.5 points. Clinton was third (146.5), St. Ignace fourth (143), and Mancelona fifth (119).

TAKING FIRST place medals for Rogers City were freshman Austin Fairbanks (112 pounds, 2-0), freshman Dylan Centala (119 pounds, 3-0), junior Justin Kelley (130 pounds, 3-0), junior Joe Marcotte (145 pounds, 3-0), sophomore Chris Rhode (189 pounds, 3-0), and sophomore Joshua Christ (275 pounds, 3-0). Marcotte and Christ?s victories were all by pin, with Marcotte wrestling a total of 3:57 minutes on the day.

Freshman Cody Wenzel (125 pounds, 3-1) took a third, while freshman Brian Krueger (103 pounds, 1-2) took a fourth. Head coach Pat Lamb was ecstatic about the way the

wrestlers performed. ?Going into the championship round we were in third place but all our wrestlers competing for a championship won, vaulting us into second,? said Lamb. ?I can?t say enough about how tenacious the Hurons wrestled all day, turning a lot of heads in the process,? he said. THE HURONS will be in action today in Oscoda with the Owls and Cheboygan. Saturday they?ll be at the Marquette Challenge, which is quickly becoming a popular event with the wrestlers, because the athletes are treated as if they are participating in a big-time sports arena, with spotlights and loud music preceding the matches.

Against Alpena, the Hurons took a 46-36 win, their third dual win of the year. Winning matches were Krueger (void), Fairbanks (fall 3:34), Centala (fall 1:51). Wenzel (14-6 decision), Marcotte (injury default), Rhode (void), Tyler Gorlewski (215 pounds, void), and Christ (fall 1:22). Lamb said, ?The coaching staff is pleased with the way the young Hurons are progressing at this point of the season.?
