UPDATED SATURDAY: Volleyball team moves on to quarterfinals
Rogers City advanced to the state quarterfinals in Class C volleyball tournament Saturday by winning the Boyne City regional.
The Hurons defeated Charlevoix, 15-5, 15-7 in the semifinal match after Leroy Pine River had defeated Forest Area 15-7, 15-10.
In the regional finals, the Hurons needed three games to defeat Pine River, 15-7, 14-16, 15-10. In the second game of the championship match, the Hurons led 8-1, 10-3, then 13-3 only to collapse while the Bucks came back to win.
The third game went back and forth in the early going before Rogers City gained control.
Rogers City will play Houghton, the UP champions, Tuesday at St. Ignace. A Class D quarterfinal will also be staged at LaSalle High School at St. Ignace that same day.
Gametime is 7:30 Tuesday. Should the Hurons defeat Houghton, they would advance to the Class C semifinals Friday at 3 p.m. at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The Class C finals are set for Saturday at 2 p.m. at WMU.
