Posen wins regional opener Wednesday, 83-79

The Posen Vikings will play for the regional Class C title Friday against Harbor Light Christian (16-7) in Newberry. The Vikings took an 83-79 win over the Rapid River Rockets Wednesday in a tale of two halves. Posen, sparked by senior guard Ron Kroll’s five three-pointers in the first half, part of his team-high 26 points, led 41-24 at halftime.

The Rockets made things interesting the in second half, coming from 17 down to within nine at 56-47 entering the fourth quarter.

Good free throw shooting, and junior forward Matt Ponik’s 10 points in the quarter kept the Rockets at bay. Junior center Aaron Hincka scored 22 points while Ponik added 18. Kroll had seven triples on the night. Justin Gustafson scored 30 for Rapid River while Kyle VanBrese socred 22 of his 29 points in the second half for the Rockets (11-12).

Posen (20-3) will tangle with Harbor Light Friday for the right to play in the quarterfinals either in Sault Ste. Marie Tuesday.
