John Andrew Shaloy

John Andrew Shaloy, 72, of Onaway, died unexpectedly Tuesday May 18, 2021 in Mackinaw City. Born in Alpena October 6, 1948, John was one of five children born to Carl Sr. and Blanche (Merritt) Shaloy. He married Karen S. Mason in Cheboygan December 30, 1970 and they made their home in Onaway for many years.

A skilled mechanic, John owned and operated Onaway Service Center and previously worked for Wolverine Power at the Boyne City steam plant.

He was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the Army’s 27th Infantry Regiment from 1968-1970 and a member of the Onaway Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.  As a younger man, John enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He loved race cars and enjoyed watching the races at the Onaway Speedway where years ago he was a driver.  Honest and forthright, it was easy to know what John thought because he always told it like it was!  And when he heard something he didn’t quite believe, he would always comment, “It’s your story, tell it the way you want.”
