Joan V. Powers

Joan V. Powers, 87, of Alpena, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 11, 2023 at Turning Brook of Alpena.

Joan was born December 28, 1935, in Rogers City to the late Herman and Evelyn (Karsten) Vogler. Joan graduated from Rogers City High School in 1953 and would later marry Donald “Don” G. Powers January 22, 1955, at St. John Lutheran Church in Rogers City. Joan helped Don as he served as a lay minister to many of the area congregations covering pastoral vacancies. She was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where she served as the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod Michigan district representative. Joan was also a charter member of the Alpena General Hospital Auxiliary.

rvived by her children, Paul (Donna) Powers and Janine Birmingham; four granddaughters, Sara Armstrong, Casey Wood, Toni (Shane) Posluszny and Alexandria (John) Poag; four great-grandchildren, Alaina and Maclyn Wood, Liam Armstrong, and Julianna Poag; and her brother, Jason Vogler. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Donald Powers; her grandson, Trevor Powers; her son-in-law, Brad Birmingham; two brothers, Herman Vogler Jr. and Neil Vogler; and her sister, Ruie Pines. The family extends a special thank you to the staff of Turning Brook for their exceptional, loving care of more than seven years.

Family will receive friends today (Thursday, November 16) at McWilliams Funeral Home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Josh Schultz officiating.
