Carl David “Dave” Giles
Carl David “Dave” Giles of Rogers City passed away August 23, 2024. He was 88, born July 26, 1936 in Petoskey to Mary Jane (Upton) and Carl William Giles.
Dave was raised in Detroit, enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation, and served during the Korean War. After the war, he received degrees in education and administration. In service to his love of God and Roman Catholic faith, he dedicated over 40 years of his life to Archdiocesan Catholic schools, both as a teacher and administrator. His tenure included Our Lady Gate of Heaven, St. Paul Catholic School in Grosse Pointe Farms, St. Mary of Port Huron, St.Gemma and St. Ignatius of Loyola in Rogers City before retiring. Mr. Giles was an inspiring educator who won several awards, including The Detroit News’ “My Favorite Teacher” contest in 1968. His positive impact touched many lives. Some of his many talents included painting, drawing, solving crossword puzzles and playing musical instruments by ear.
Dave lived a full life, blessed with love and family. He will be deeply missed by those he leaves behind, including his loving wife of 64 years, Maragaret Mary (Linehan) and their nine children, Phillip (Lisa), Margaret (Mimi) Przybyla (Kevin), David (Lashawnda), Mary Kuzner (David), Michael (Michelle), Norah Domzalski (Robert), Peter, Carl (Shannon) and Jane Longstaff (Brian); 21 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary McGowan, Susan Hull (Larry), Rebecca Adams (Ralph), Amy Haggerty (Curt) and Barbara Giles-Lemon.
He was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Giles (and Joanne); and brothers-in-law, Ken Lemon and John “Bud” McGowan.

A funeral Mass celebrating Dave’s life was held at National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica, Royal Oak, August 30, followed by burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
