Radka Building will be site of RCHS prom

The 2003 Rogers City High School prom may look something from a Hollywood movie premier this year, minus the red carpet and panning spotlights, as the event will be conducted at the Elmer Radka Building in downtown Rogers City May 10. Members of the RCHS prom committee had been looking for a possible site, and have used rural halls in recent years, but ran into scheduling conflicts this year.

?It was suggested we contact Owen and Marion Lamb regarding the use of the Radka Building downtown,? said principal Jim Connell at Monday?s Rogers City Area Schools Board of Education meeting.

THE LAMBS have been handling the Radka Estate since the former city attorney and county prosecutor died last year. Radka owned several buildings in Rogers City. The Radka Building was the site of a well attended Rogers City Chamber of Commerce ?Business After Hours,? last year.

President Scott McLennan said ?it sounds like a good idea — it?s a beautiful facility.? The issue of liability for the off-campus event was brought up by board member Dana LaBar, who was reassured by Connell that the district will take out a 24-hour policy, if need be. The school board gave its blessing to the proposal

DETAILS ALSO are being worked out to conduct a RCHS drama club dinner/theater at the Radke Building, as well. The RCHS Drama Club has been l

ooking for a location for a dinner/theater, with the play being a murder mystery, but was unsuccessful in working out the arrangements.

Drama Club advisor Bryan Mills was entertaining the idea of trying to have the dinner/theater in the elementary gym, but Connell talked with the Lambs who were receptive to the idea. The Radka Building could see activity three consecutive Saturdays starting in late April. The first two would be the dinner theater on back-to-back Saturdays, followed by the prom.

THE LAMBS also donated 285 square feet of quarter-inch double-plated glass, which had been sitting in the basement.

?I went down there and loaded up my pickup truck twice. Kids in the art department have already started using them,? said Connell. ?It probably had a value of between $800 and $1,000, and I think that?s conservative,? Connell continued. ?I think if you were to purchase the glass it would be more like $1,200. They also said if we can use any more, to come back.?
