Hurons open wrestling season against solid competition

The wrestling season began Thursday night for the Hurons as the team rolled out the orange Bill Barrett mat for visitors from Petoskey and Ogemaw Heights. The Hurons defeated Ogemaw and lost to Petoskey. Complete results will be posted here next week and will be in Advance.

The meet was one of six scheduled dates the Rogers City wrestlers will be able to perform in front of the town?s loyal wrestling fans.

The Hurons host Alpena next Thursday.

Team and individual districts also will be in the RCHS gym in mid-February.

The wrestling program is coming off its 16th team district championship and a season in which the school?s first individual state champion was crowned.

Andy Keller went 52-0 for the Hurons during his senior season.

Coach Pat Lamb brin

gs in a young group of wrestlers into the 2002-03 season as six or seven freshmen may start for the Orange and Black.

?There is a ton of talent there,? said Lamb. ?They are very coachable. They all get along really well and I think we?re going to have a fun season.?

And they are not afraid of coach Lamb?s grueling practices.

?As a coach I couldn?t be happier with the way these kids are working,? said Lamb. ?I pretty much put them through the wringer and they haven?t complained or whined about it. As a matter of fact, they come back asking for more. Sometimes I run out of things to give them.?

There are six dates of competition in December but one notable change this month is the absence of the Bill Barrett Memorial Tournament which has been moved to January 11.
