Posen wins close games to sweep competition

The Viking volleyball team won both of its matches in North Star League action the last week. Posen won a couple of 16-14 games against Fairview and Au Gres to improve its record to 5-2 in league battles. After dropping a close game to Fairview Monday, 13-15, the Vikings came back and won 15-6 in the second.

Then the Eagles and Vikings went back and forth in the decisive third game. Posen was leading 13-11, but quickly had the table turned and wound up behind 14-13, to the home team. With junior Shannon Ciarkowski serving, Posen rallied one last time for three consecutive points for the victory.

Ciarkowski had six blocks and seven kills. Sophomore Katie Lewandowski and her senior sister Julie both had seven kills apiece. The siblings also combined for 12 aces. Katie had nine digs. Sophomore Courtney Romel and junior Kyrie Kuffel both had three kills. Romel added 12 assists and six digs.

THE VIKING junior varsity also overcame a slow start. They dropped their opening game 7-15, but came back with 15-5 and 15-6 victories to capture the match. The Posen JV record is 7-1. Freshman Beth Julia

n had six kills, two aces, and 11 assists. Sophomore Jackie Szczerowski had nine assists and two aces.

Freshman Jill Krajniak had 21 sets and three assists, while freshman Amanda Pieczynski had five aces, four sets, and five assists. The varsity won its first game against Au Gres, 16-14, after a sluggish start, and the second game, 15-5.

?We continue to work better and better together,? said coach Elena Meharg. It took three games for the JV to defeat Au Gres. The Vikings won the first game 15-2, lost the second 2-15, but dominated the deciding game, 15-3. Krajniak had 12 sets, two aces, and four assists.

Julian contributed seven kills, five sets, four aces, and four assists, while Szczerowski had five sets and five assists. The JV?s chances at a conference championship depend on how they do against the only school that has been able to beat them, as they are at Hale tonight (Jan. 30).
