Posen looks to knock Fairview from first Friday

The Posen basketball team knocked one team out of first place when the Vikings walloped Mio by 29 points January 14, in easily the highlight game of the season. The Vikes (7-6) would like to knock another North Star League school from the top when they host the Fairview Eagles Friday. It?ll be the first meeting of the season between the two teams. The schools will face off on the hardwood twice over the next two-and-a-half weeks.

ONE THING can be said about the 2002-2003 Posen basketball team: they play the good teams tough and bury everyone else. That certainly was the case when they were rude visitors on their trip to Arenac Eastern last Friday, where they blasted the home team, 71-26. The Eagles scored the first basket of the night but were outscored the rest of the first quarter, 20-2.

?We played tenacious defense,? said coach Ron Misiak. The defense didn?t let up in the second quarter, as the Vikings allowed only four points. Arenac could manage only one field goal in the second quarter. The halftime score was 37-8. ?Everybody got a lot of playing time,? said Misiak. ?It was tota

lly a team effort. It didn?t matter which group of guys I put out there, they just kept adding to the score.? Posen outscored Arenac in the third quarter, 16-9, and 18-9 and in the final quarter.

JUNIOR RON KROLL scored 19 points and had seven steals. ?Ron Kroll totally took over the game and frustrated their guards,? said Misiak. Two other players recorded double-doubles: senior Pat Bronikowski had 15 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Matt Ponik was around his season average with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The next week will provide some tough matchups for the Vikings as they host Rogers City Tuesday.

The junior varsity is playing ?very well? according to coach Gary Bisson, as they won their fourth game of the season, 48-44 over Arenac Eastern. Matt Szczerowski scored 18 points, while Joe Styma had 13. Bisson said they are coming together and cutting down on their mistakes.
