Huron track team at SAC event

The Rogers City track teams participated in the Rudyard Invitational Tuesday with the girls taking third place, while the boys were fifth. The girls were only three points behind second place Newberry. ?From a coach?s position, the Hurons did an excellent job,? said coach Stacey Malocha. ?Many non-scoring athletes broke their personal records. It was a nice day, no snow anywhere, and no one froze.? Earning first place for the girls was Lauren Fairbanks in the 1600m (5:28:42) and 800m run (2:24:08), as well as the high jump (5?).

Lacey Kreft set personal records in the 3200m run (12:18:54), for a first, and was third in the 1600m run (5:40:81). Charity Lewis was first in the discus (102? 2?) and second in the shot put (30? 6?). Kristyn Blackmer was third in the high jump (4? 6?). The Hurons boys were four points out of fourth. Kyle Greene was first in the shot put (48? 31/2?) and discus (141? 10?), both new personal records. Greene was second in the high jump (5? 8?).

Tony Fleming took a first place medal in the high jump, edging Greene by two inches. Rocky DeRoque set a new 2003 personal best in the 800m run (2:03:89), as did Aaron Smuda in the 3200m run ( 10:31:42). Both earned second place medals. THE HURON boys and girls both finished fourth at the St. Ignace Invitational last Thursday. The girls had 82 points, 10 out of third, and nearly 20 out of first. The boys had 60 points, 15 out of third, and 83 behind first place East Jordan.

Taking first for the Hurons were: Fairbanks, who recorded a 2003 personal best in the 1600m run (5:28:22). She also took a first in the 800m run (2:28:24) and the high jump (5?). A personal record was recorded by Charity Lewis in the shot put (31? 3 1/2?). Lewis also was first in the discus (101? 7?). Kreft recorded a personal best in the 3200m run (13:35:76), which was good for a third place finish, but later topped at Rudyard. THE 1600M relay team of Susan Getzmeyer, Sara Belusar, Blackmer and Fairbanks took a third (4:40). Blackmer placed third in the high jump (4? 8?). The 400m relay team took a fourth (58.5). The group consisted of Amy Hopp, Jessica Brown, Belusar, and Blackmer.

DeRoque took a first for the Huron boys in the 800m run (2:04:13). Greene earned a first in the shot put (46? 10 3/4?) and the discus (141? 7?), which was a personal best (until he went to Rudyard), and took a third in the high jump and a fourth in the long jump. Smuda recorded a personal best in the 1600m run (4:56) on his way to placing second. He was third in the 3200m run. Personal records were followed for many of the athletes and that included Isaac Momrik. He took a third in the 110m hurdles (18:85).

THE ROGERS CITY girls won the Presque Isle County championship (223) at Posen April 30, while the boys were second (138). Earning first place medals were Fairbanks in the 200m and 800m dash, the 3200m run, and the high jump. Kreft took a first in the 800m and mile run, while Lewis was tops in the shot put and the discuss. Earning second place fini

For the Huron boys, Smuda took a first in the mile and the 3200m run. DeRoque was first in the 800m run, while Greene earned first place medals in the long jump, shot put, high jump and the discus. Earning second: Jacob Brown, 200m dash; Eric Ciarkowski, 100m dash.

Third: Michael Brege, 200m dash; the 1600m relay team; Brown, 100m dash, 110m hurdles; DeRoque, long jump, 3200m run; Momrik, high jump. The Hurons will be at Alcona Monday. The conference meet is two weeks from today.
