Boys strike pay dirt: second best in the state!

The Rogers City High School boys? bowling team was second only to Traverse City St. Francis at the state finals at Sunnybrook Lanes, Sterling Heights for the Class C-D competition. The Hurons made the round of 16 finalists by defeating Center Line St. Clement, 2554-2460, and went on to the quarterfinals to defeat Freeland 2429-2180. In the semifinals, Rogers City was pitted against the dreaded Sandusky team, whose reputation preceded them, but the Hurons once again relied on their determination and came up smiling with the win, in a 2592-2526 squeaker.

The other semifinal match was between Traverse City St. Francis and AuGres Sims with TC taking the match 2335-2309. The scene was set with two teams wanting the state title and earning every pin fall during a trying day. Rogers City bowled team scores of 223, 214, 1044 and 1080 for a two-game Baker and two-game regular bowling total of 2561.

That would ordinarily do the trick, so to speak, until Traverse City St. Francis bowled 189, 168, 1090 and 1210, for a 2658 total score and Kyle Morris rolled a perfect 300 in the second game. It?s hard to beat perfection, but the Huron team did its best and second place in the state, is quite an accomplishment.

THE RC GIRLS? team beat Memphis 1892-1574 in the round of 16 finalists before advancing to the quarterfinals. The Hurons were defeated 1962-1936 in a close match by the Freeland team in the quarterfinal match, which sent Freeland on to second in the state to Sandusky?s first place state championship win, 2078-2014.

IN THE INDIVIDUAL finals, Nathan Darga and Travis Poch survived the first round eliminations. Darga bowled 1334 and Poch had 1217 for sixth and 13th places respectively. In the round of 16 finalists, Darga went on to defeat Nathan Doherty of Brown City, 212-212, 278-202, and 222-159 to enter the quarterfinal battle. Poch was eliminated in the round of 16 finalists, losing to Marcus Oien of Traverse City St. Francis, 247-247, 213-163, and 168-211. In the semifinal match, Dar

ga was pitted against a tough Tony Doerr of Sandusky and was taken down in two, 234-201 and 279-247. Doerr ended up the state individual champion after defeating Matt Morse of Hanover-Horton, 244-211 and 203-199.

IN THE GIRLS? individual matches, only Heather Kowalski remained after the first round scores, placing eighth in the standings with her 1016 after scores of 160, 147, 164, 159, 180, and 208. In the round of 16 finalists, Kowalski lost to Marcy Brown of Sandusky, 201-157 and 177-160. Other individuals were Amanda Minton who placed 22nd in the first round with 898, and Kari Rhode who placed 26th with 849.

Taking the individual state championship was Breena Schneider of Allen Park Cabrini beating Amanda Wrathell of Sandusky, 193-210, 234-191, 289-183. The boys? and girls? RCHS bowlers did a fine job representing the high school and their community at the state finals, and put forth great efforts to capture second in the state for the boys and making the quarterfinals for the girls.
