Hurons fall in regional final to Pine River

Wednesday night the Rogers City Huron wrestling team traveled to Leroy Pine River High School for the team regional meet.
Rogers City was set to take on North Star League foe Mio in the regional semifinals but Mio was forced to forfeit the match after they used an ineligible wrestler during the team district tournament.
The Hurons had their hands raised for the wins against Mio before settling in to watch the other semifinal featuring Pine River against Traverse City St. Francis. Pine River won the match 68-12.
Starting weight was 189 pounds and the Hurons voided there and at 215 to trail 12-0 early on. Senior Laine Curtis lost by pin at heavyweight and freshman Sam Sobeck lost 11-0 at 103 pounds and Pine River led 22-0.
Junior Tommy Vogelheim (112), sophomore Tristan Baller (119), sophomore Zach Myers (125) and sophomore Andrew Haselhuhn (130) all lost by pin and Pine River led 46-0.
Junior Justin Saile got his team on the board with a 4-2 victory at 135 pounds making it 46-3.
Sophomore Max Kowalewsky was pinned at 140 pounds to give the Bucks a 52-3 lead. Senior Cam Urban (145) won by pin as did senior Jacob Sobeck (152) to make it 52-15. Senior Austin Bober won 13-2 to make it 52-19. The match ended with
Pine River will now advance to the state quarterfinals in Battle Creek. Rogers City finished the season with a record of 22-11 and as a regional finalist were among the top 16 teams in the state.
Five Hurons will battle for a trip to the individual finals Saturday at the regional competition in Rogers City beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sam Sobeck, Jacob Sobeck, Urban, Saile and Bober will be looking to place in the top four at their weight classes to punch a ticket to the state finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills March 5-7.
