Hurons sweep districts in Posen

For the first time since the 2012 season, Rogers City came away with a pair of district championship trophies. The Huron girls, the defending Division 4 state champions, demolished Wolverine 24-0 and then topped Posen 14-5 in the championship game.

Huron teams celebrated a pair of district championships Monday in Posen.

Alexa Quaine no-hit Wolverine in the opener and smashed a grand slam to aide her cause. Junior catcher Sarah Meredith also hit a home run.

A game Posen squad beat Onaway 7-3 in the second semifinal before squaring off with the Hurons on the Posen home field.

Freshman second baseman Hannah Fleming set the tone for what would be a slugging effort for Rogers City by hitting a solo homer in the first inning off Posen ace Taylor Chojnacki. They scored six runs on six hits in the third inning, highlighted by senior centerfielder Autumn Idalski’s three-run home run.

Posen came back with four runs in the bottom of the third keyed by a sacrifice fly from Monica Bartz and an RBI single from Chojnacki.

That only woke up the Huron bats, as they scored three in the fifth and four more in the sixth. Freshman short stop Kayla Rabeau belted a two-run homer in the fifth and had a thre-run homer in the sixth.

The Huron baseball team (26-6) advanced to the regional tournament with a 7-1 win over Onaway (13-19) in Monday’s district final. The score was tied at one apiece through five innings until the Huron rallied for five runs to pull away.

The orange and black tacked on another run in the top of the seventh to give the squad its 10th win in a row and a trip to the Pellston regional tournament where they will face off against Norway at 10 a.m.

First-year coach Ian Lundquist won his first district championship and wanted to give his players all the credit for the hard work put in during the offseason.

“This is awesome,” said Lundquist, holding the district trophy as vehicle horns honked while driving away from the County League Field in Posen. He was just happy to see the smiles on his players’ faces after the win.

Lundquist had confidence that hard hit balls would start falling in. “We mixed in a little sma

ll ball and created havock,” said Lundquist.

Four straight batters bunted to bring runners around in the game-winning rally.

Alex Andrzelewski earned the win, while Justin Saile pitched the seventh.

Onaway advanced to the district final with a 3-2 win over Posen. Cardinal shortstop Zeke Nave scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh.

The Hurons clobbered Wolverine, 21-0, in the other district semifinal.

Both teams will be in action in Saturday’s Pellston regional tournament.
