Vulcans 14 and under win ASA state title

The Moran Iron Works Vulcans 14 and Under team brought home the Amateur Softball Association Junior Olympic state title over the weekend. The title gives them the privilege to play at the national tournament in York, Pennsylvania July 27-31.

In Holland the tournament began Thursday with a win over the Michigan Generals 8-2. In game two of the tournament, the Vulcans fell to the Richmond Blues 3-2. Friday morning the girls’ defeated Michigan Gold Rush 13-0. In game four the Vulcans defeated the MBS Jets 4-3. Saturday was an 8-5 win over the Traverse City Cherry Bombs 8-5. The Vulcans then had a rematch against the Richmond Blues and won 7-6. Sunday during the championship game the Vulcans defeated the SBC Jets 4-1. Throughout the tournament Precious Delos Santos of Indian River had three singles and a double-scoring eight runs. Onaway’s Kayla Metty had three singles and two triples as she scored six runs and had six RBI. Heidi Walters of Traverse City had three singles and a double scoring four runs and having three RBI.
Gaylord’s Savanna Gapinski had six singles, a double and two triples as she scored four run

s and drove in seven. Kortney Dunn of Alpena had seven doubles and a triple scoring three runs and driving in three.
Onaway’s Kennedy Crawford had three singles scoring three times and driving in three.
Rogers City’s Amanda Wirgau had three singles and two doubles as she scored three runs and drove in three. Rogers City’s Alissa Bowden had two singles scoring two runs. Onaway’s Calley Selke had a single and an in-the-park homerun scoring twice and having an RBI. Maggie Wells of Johannesburg-Lewiston scored two runs. Angela Iott of Kalkaska had four singles scoring five runs and driving in one.

The Vulcans are at the Traverse City Softball Spectacular July 8-10.
