Earl S. Hoffmeyer Sr.

Earl Stanley Hoffmeyer Sr., 82, of Onaway, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at home surrounded by his family. Earl was born August 19, 1937 at home in Onaway to Donald and Eva (Hilliker) Hoffmeyer. On March 25, 1961 he married Christine Thorsen at First Baptist Church in Onaway.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Earl is survived by his four children, Patti (Blair) Nolde, Allan (Barbara) Hoffmeyer, Earl (Diane) Hoffmeyer Jr. and Kelli (Bob) Anderson, all of Onaway.  Earl also leaves his 13 grandchildren, Jeremy (Stephanie) Wendt and Jeffrey Wendt, both of Rogers City, Tiffany Traynham of Allegan, Joe Traynham of Onaway, Lacey (Jacob) Merschback of Royal Oak, Collin (Emily) Hoffmeyer of Onaway, Randy (Katie) Hoffmeyer of Wausau, Wisconsin, Andy Hoffmeyer of Millersburg, Amanda (Daniel) Tallman of Lake Orion, Rachel (Matt) Kitchen of Clinton Township, Britney and Brooklyn Hoffmeyer, both of Onaway, and Megan Skinner of Auburn.  Earl was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Allan and Jay (Denise), both of Onaway; four sisters, Florence Newsted of Fremont, Elsie Smith of Brighton, Thelma (Aaron) Curtis of Onaway and Darlene (Rick) Homkes of Russiaville, Indiana; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Painter; and four brothers-in-law, Glen Newsted, Stanley Smith, Sam Painter and Chuck Light.

Earl worked hard all his life, including several years of working construction for the MRA (Moral Rearmament Association) on Mackinac Island.  He retired as an ironworker from Local

340 after nearly 40 years. He was very well-loved and respected by his co-workers.  Earl was a handyman and outdoorsman. He enjoyed carpentry, woodworking, hunting, fishing and was a certified welder. He most of all enjoyed spending time with his family.  Earl was preceded in death this year by his pug dog companion, “Mickey.”  He was an active member of the Onaway United Methodist Church and served as an usher until his illness.     

Visitation was Friday, September 20 at the Onaway United Methodist Church, 3647 N. North Lynn St.followed by a funeral service Saturday. The Revs. Yoo Jin Kim and Carmen Cook co-officiated. Earl’s final resting place will be at Hillcrest Cemetery. The family suggests donations to honor Earl be made to the Onaway United Methodist Church or McLaren Home Care and Hospice.
