Arlene Marie Smith

Arlene Marie Smith, 87, of Gladwin, formerly of Atlanta, died at The Brook of Gladwin Monday March 16, 2020.

The daughter of L B and Vera (Caldwell) Smith, Arlene was born in an upstairs bedroom in a farmhouse east of Onaway. She loved living on the farm, enjoyed farm life, and talked of it often. Arlene attended school in Onaway, kindergarten through the 12th grade, was an excellent student, and made many lifelong friends during her school years. Growing up in Onaway, Arlene worked at The Dime Store, The Onaway Credit Union and the REA.  She enjoyed the people and her work.

Arlene married Frederick J. Smith on her birthday, November 25, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Onaway. Blessed with a wonderful marriage and a beautiful family, in 2019 Arlene and Fred celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Arlene attended Delta College and earned an associates degree in accounting. She loved numbers and ke

pt Fred from spending too much money as well as invested wisely for the future. She loved to travel and after retirement she and Fred were able to visit many wonderful places in the world. 

Arlene is survived by her husband, Fred of Gladwin; sons, Craig (Jan) of Harrison and Eric of Gaylord; a daughter, Lisa Rivard (Lesley Miller) of Tyrone, Pennslyvania; five grandchildren, Gary, Nick, Veronica, Andrew and Zach; and three great-grandchildren. Preceding Arlene in death were her siblings, Edward and Ruthaileen.  

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Arlene to the Onaway High School Band. Cremation arrangements were in care of the Chagnon Funeral Home.
