Sherly A. Dunbar

Sherly A. Dunbar, a longtime resident of Onaway passed away on his birthday May 9, 2020.  He was 94 years old.  He grew up on a farm in Johannesburg, the second of nine kids. He was drafted into the Army when he was 18 and served in World War II. He was active military during the Korean War and the Vietnam War and retired as a criminal investigator for the Army in 1967.

Following his retirement, the family moved to Onaway where he and his wife Josefine raised two children, Joseph “Joe” and Mark Dunbar; both graduates of Onaway High School. He worked for Proctor and Gamble in Cheboygan

for many years and after his retirement spent time in Sebring, Florida and finally Lilian, Alabama where they resided for over 25 years until his passing.  

He is survived by his wife Josefine and his two children, Joe and Mark.  He had seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild that he loved to be around.  He characterized in every way those attributes that defined the Greatest Generation:  living through monumental change, a tremendous work ethic, frugality and sacrifice and honor.  

He lived an extraordinary life, saw the world with his loving and devoted wife Josefine, whom he was married to for 66 years.  He was beloved by his family and friends and will be forever missed.
