He was born February 17, 1929 to James and Gladys Leow in Rogers City.

Carl married Audrey M. Hilla February 23, 1952 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Rogers City and together they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2020.

Carl graduated from Rogers City High School as a member of the Class of 1947. Carl began his career at an early age, first working for Jay Lynch at Northern Auto while he was in the 10th grade. Prior to entering the service, Carl had worked his way up to the parts manager position at Northern Auto.

Carl was drafted into military service in January 1951 and served two years of active duty with the 174th Military Police Battalion of the United States Army. He was discharged in January 1953 to the U.S. Army Ready Reserve and in 1957 was honorably discharged from the Army Reserves. The highlight of Carl’s military service was being a member of the Army Honor Guard during a visit by Gen. Douglas MacArthur to Fort Sheridan where Carl was stationed.

Upon completion of his active duty military service Carl returned to Rogers City where he was offered a management position at Northern Auto in Gaylord by Jay Lynch. At the same time, George Jones offered Carl employment at the United States Steel (USS) Calcite Plant in Rogers City. Rather than move his family, Carl elected to begin employment with USS and rose through the ranks there as the dock office clerk, advancing to mill and dock foreman, and finishing his career as the general manager of mill and dock. Carl held several patents with USS for plant process innovations which he invented during the course of his employment. Carl retired in 1986 after 34 years of service. Carl’s life passion was hunting snowshoe rabbits in the swamps of northern Michigan with his beagles. He was well-known locally for his hunting skills and his fine dogs.

Carl is survived by his wife, Audrey; and four children: Mike (Suzanne) and James (Lori) of Rogers City, Lisa Paddleford (Jody Burkes) of St. David, Arizona and Rick (Leisa) of Grand Haven; six grandchildren, Patrick, Wendy, Dan, Tim, Jami and Jena; six great-grandchildren, Ali

yana, Nolan, Lacey, Alex, Garrett and Olivia; and a nephew, John Leow. Carl also leaves behind close friends, Bill and Jeanette Buczkowski, and Duane Rohrer.

Carl was preceded in passing by his parents, James and Gladys; a brother, Robert and sister-in-law, Margaret; a nephew, Thomas Leow; and a son-in-law, William (Bill) Paddleford.

Private services will be held at the Beck Funeral Home.
