Mr. Nicholas “Nick” Wittman Sr.

Mr. Nicholas “Nick” Wittman Sr., 90, of Hillman, passed away peacefully May 11, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 16, 1929 in Detroit to the late, Nicholas and Mildred (Errer) Wittman. He married the love of his life, Johanna Bachman, September 17, 1949 in Sebewaing and together they were the best example of married love celebrating 68 plus years of marriage. They moved to the Hillman area in 1974 where they were successful dairy farmers until retiring to the lake house in 1998. They owned and operated Mystic Acres Dairy Farm for many years in Sebewaing and then relocated the farm to Hillman where it remained in operation until 1992.

Nick was an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus having served as grand knight four times. He was also past member of the Farm Bureau, ASCS, and FmHA and a honorary member of the FFA. He enjoyed his family, sports, dancing, watching “Gunsmoke,” playing solitaire, reading his daily devotionals, praying the rosary, and taking pontoon rides on Long Lake.

He is survived by his three sons and five daughters, Nick (Kathy) Wittman Jr., Bill Wittman and Joe Wittman all of Hillman and Mary Schwalm of Dansville, Teresa (Bob Clark) Hornbacher, Jan (Steve) Behring and Lynn (Neil) Morrison all of Hillman and Ann (Kris Duchene) Herrick of St. Clair; 25 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. ed Wittman; a sister, Mildred Mann; and a brother, Peter; grandchildren, Maria Wittman, Amy Jo Wittman and Nicholas Wittman V; a great-grandson, Michael Hunt; and a son-in-law, Kevin Herrick.

Nick will be laid to rest at St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery in Hillman. A memorial Mass will be held in celebration of his life May 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Hillman, which is also being live streamed at boxcase.tv/view/celebrations-of-life-nick-wittman-pif39irs7pvsg04wgvzm.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Compassus Hospice, 12480 State St., Suite 10 Atlanta, Michigan 49709.
