Theresa Ann Szczerowski

On Tuesday, June 1, 2021 Theresa Ann Szczerowski was called home at the age of 67 following a courageous battle with brain cancer. “Our family has lost an amazing mother, Mimi, daughter, sister and friend.”

She was born May 12, 1954 in Alpena to Edward and Virginia (Smolinski) Smigelski.

Theresa grew up on her family’s farm in Posen where she learned the value of hard work at a young age. Upon graduation from high school, Theresa attended Alpena Community College to further a career in nursing. Upon completion and earning her degree, Theresa moved to Petoskey for a short period then eventually moved back to the Presque Isle area to start her 38-year career at Alpena General Hospital.

During high school she met the man she’d marry, the late Ervin Szczerowski, whom she married May 3, 1975. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially camping with family and friends. Although Theresa had endured many tragedies in her life, she remained a devoted and faithful Catholic. She was an active member of St. Casimir Catholic Church in Posen, volunteered on various committees in her community, and dedicated much time and prayer to her son Matthew. Theresa also enjoyed spending time at Grand Lake, margaritas with her work girls, tending to her flower beds, and traveling to new places after retirement (Hawaii, Alaska, Mexico, Jamaica), but her most cherished memories are those spent with her seven grandchildren. Our beloved “Mimi” was always looking for ways to create forever memories with her babies.

Left to carry on her legacy are her four children, Rebecca (Darren) Westfall, Brian (Jessica) Szczerowski, Jaclyn (Mike) Lancewicz and Matthew Szczerowski; and her beloved grandchildren, Ryland, Carter, Harper, Kenzie, Brynn, Kai and Sutton; her mother, Virginia Smigelski; and two brothers, James (Lorraine) Smigelski and Jerry (Dawn) Smigel

ski. She is also survived by a brother-in-law, Bob Salenski.

Theresa was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin “Stork” Szczerowski; her father, Edward Smigelski; and a sister, Rose Salenski.

Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home Monday, June 7, from 4-8 p.m. with a parish wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume Tuesday at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Posen from 10 a.m. until time of her Mass at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Arthur Duchnowicz officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery.
