Shirley Anne Crowe

Shirley Anne Crowe, 80, of Onaway, died at home unexpectedly Thursday, September 23, 2021. The daughter of Fred and Margaret (Gillett) ZurHorst, Shirley was born September 28, 1940 in Waverly Township.  She married Ruell D. Crowe April 25, 1958.

Surviving Shirley is her daughter, Jessie Horrocks of Onaway; a son, Richard “Rick” Crowe of Maywood, Missouri; grandsons, Travis (Crystal) Horrocks of Onaway and Duane Crowe of Bellingham, Washington; granddaughter, Chelsea (Josef) Schmid of Decatur, Illinois; and two great-grandchildren, Clara and Oliver Horrocks. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and in 1991 by her husband of 33 years, Ruell Crowe.

Shirley made a career working as a bookkeeper for Onaway Wood Products, Moran Forest Products, and had several other clients she kept books for as well. She later worked in the office at Elk Run Landfill from where she retired.

She served as Forest Township clerk and worked with her husband on their farm. Hardworking, she helped bale hay, take care of cattle, and whatever else needed to be done on the farm.  She grew a garden, canned vegetables, and baked bread and pies. She loved to re

ad but most of all Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family.

Determined and strong-willed, Shirley was extremely independent. She never wanted to be a bother to anyone, never complained, and always minded her own business. Neutral like Switzerland, Shirley kept her opinions to herself, never wanting to make waves.

She was a tad feisty and had a great sense of humor.  Shirley’s strength, her kind heart, and her great love for her family will be sadly missed.

Shirley was honored by her family in a private graveside service at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Shirley to the Onaway Fire Department.
