James “Jim” P. Yates

James “Jim” P. Yates was born in Rogers City, February 12, 1943. The Lord called Jim home Saturday, March 19, 2022.

Jim was an exemplary Christian. Upon meeting Jim, you would quickly see he was the most generous, outgoing, hardworking, honest, caring person you could meet. He had many talents and was driven to help others any chance he could.

Throughout his lifetime, Jim had many accomplishments. Most notably, he served his country for five years in the Marine Corps where he was recognized for his expert marksmanship. Jim went on to graduate with a criminal justice degree from Michigan State which led him to honorably serve his community as a Detroit police officer.

After being shot in the line of duty, Jim was medically retired and began a new career working with a transport company for over 25 years where he retired for a second time.  But those that knew Jim, knew Jim never retired and was active till the day he was called home.

Jim, a northern Michigan farm boy was an enthusiastic hunter in his youth which transitioned into training, competing, judging and becoming an active leader in the field trial community.

Starting with German wirehaired pointers and transitioning to German shorthaired pointers, Jim was active in the sport for over 40 years having produced many champions.

His dedication for the sport didn’t go unnoticed, which is apparent through his long list of lifelong friends. This sport allowed Jim, an avid rider, to spend many days riding alongside his teammate and love of his life wife Kathleen.

Jim married Kathleen Ann Karsten September 15, 1973. During their 48 years of marriage, Jim and Kathleen enjoyed many memories as the team they were.

Their interests were widespread, you could find them at the skeet range or practicing with their pistols, riding motorcycles, scuba diving, training their animals or hunting together on a winter’s morning.

One thing was always clear, Jim and Kathleen were a team. They loved a new adventure and were each other’s biggest supporters. The memories they’ve created will always hold a special place in Kathleen’s heart.

Jim was a unique individual that will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He was preceeded in death by his father, Clyde

Yates; his mother, Helen (Streaseck) Yates; baby brother, Mark; and brother, Joseph A. Yates. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathleen A. (Karsten) Yates; sisters, Elaine (Fred) Bluck and Shirley Yates both from Alpena; numerous nieces, nephews and family throughout Alpena, Rogers City and Idaho; as well as many friends throughout the country.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a contribution in Jim’s honor to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), or Memorial contributions may be given to any organization that Jim would support.

There will be a Celebration of Life to be announced at a later date, all will be welcome to attend. Please leave a message of comfort for Jim’s family at 1-877-231-7900 or sign his guestbook at www.borekjennings.com.
