Posen High School names four valedictorians for Class of 2022

Posen High School (PHS) Class of 2022 will feature four valedictorians with perfect 4.0 grade point averages (GPA). The class of 18 will march for commencement ceremonies June 10 at 7:30 p.m. on the football field, as the previous two graduating classes have done. 

The four valedictorians are, in alphabetical order Makayla Kamyszek, Elizabeth Romel, Sophia Romel and Leah Themel. Abigail Schellie is the salutatorian and there are a total of eight honor graduates. 

Makayla Kamyszek (4.000) GPA, is the daughter of Jenna and Greg Kamyszek. During her high school years, she has been a member of the trip club, pep club, National Honor Society (NHS), basketball, volleyball and softball, making the all-conference teams in all three sports. She was named athlete of the year in 2021 and scored her 1,000th career point in basketball her senior year. 

She plans to attend Alpena Community College (ACC) to play softball and basketball while studying in the nursing program. Her goals are to transfer to a university to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing then pursue a doctorate degree as a nurse anesthetist.  

Elizabeth Romel (4.000) GPA, is the daughter of John and Ariane Romel. While in high school she participated in basketball, softball, volleyball and track and field, earning all-conference in softball and basketball and qualifying for the state meet in track and field. She was named athlete of the year in 2021. She was a member of NHS, pep club, student council, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), trip club and earned the presidential award, M-Step Educational Award, Geometry Educational Award, Environmental Science Educational Award and English Educational Award. 

She plans to attend the University of Michigan to pursue an education leading to a career in speech pathology. 

Sophia Romel (4.000) GPA, is the daughter of Chad and Jessica Romel. She has been a member of the NHS, pep club, student council, trip club and SADD. She has also participated in track and field, basketball and softball while a student at PHS. 

She plans to attend Grand Valley State University to pursue a degree in physical therapy in hopes of becoming a pediatric physical therapist as a career. 

Leah Themel (4.000) GPA, is the daughter of Laura and Dan Themel. She has been involved with robotics, SADD, Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council, pep club, trip club, student council and NHS. She has also participated in volleyball and earned all-conference in track and field. She earned academic awards for anatomy, biology, commercial business, precalculus and for perfect attendance. She also earned the presidential award, Ironwoman Award, Distance Award and SADD award for outstanding service. 

She will attend Central Michigan University to earn a biomedical degree, then transfer to a medical school to pursue a career as a physician.

Abigail Schellie (3.900) GPA, is the daughter of Sharon Zdybel-Colburn and John Colburn. While a student at PHS, she has been a member of SADD, student council, pep club and NHS. She earned the presidential award, North Star League scholar-athlete award and earned all-conference in softball while also participating in volleyball and basketball. 

She plans to attend Saginaw Valley State University to pursue a master’s degree in nursing.

Ethan Soik (3.625) GPA, is the son of Eric and Anna Soik. He listed trip club and yearbook as organizations he participated in during his high school years. He earned all-conference, first team in basketball during his senior season in 2022. 

His future plans include attending ACC and then entering the workforce.

Joseph Konieczny (3.620) GPA, is the son of Brian and Leslie Konieczny. He played football, basketball and baseball while at PHS and was a member of the trip club, pep club and robotics’ team. 

He plans to study civil engineering at Ferris State University (FSU). 

Anton Strzelecki (3.246) GPA, is the son of Rebecca Strzelecki and Anthony Strzelecki While at PHS he participated in SADD, pep club, basketball, baseball and football. 

His plans are to attend FSU to pursue a degree in heating, ventilation and air conditioning engineering.
