Stanley “Stan” Philip Mulka
Stanley “Stan” Philip Mulka, 79, of Tucson, Arizona passed away July 7, 2024 at his home. He was born April 17, 1945 and raised in Rogers City. He was the son of Leopold and Nina Mulka (nee Micketti).
He graduated high school from Saint Paul Seminary. Stan is a graduate of Central Michigan University (Bachleor of Arts, Master of Arts) and was conferred a psychology specialist degree.
Stan spent his professional career as an educator in the metro-Detroit area, ultimately retiring as the director of special education for the Oxford Area Community Schools.
Highlights of his career include being the president of special education administrators of Oakland County and Administrative coordinator for Northeast County Oakland Vocational Consortium.
Stan survived two near-death experiences. First as a deckhand on the S/S Cedarville, a bulk carrier ship that sailed around the Great Lakes transporting limestone, which tragically sank May 7, 1965. Then in the 2000s after receiving a stage four B cell lymphoma cancer diagnosis.
Stan retired to Tucson and devoted his time to philanthropic causes. He supported numerous causes including the Alliance Fund, where he served as a board member, the Thornhill-Lopez Center on 4th Avenue, the Arizona Land and Water Trust, and Community Foundation of Southern Arizona.
Stan was known for his friendly demeanor and was passionate about helping his family, friends and community. He led an active life and enjoyed gardening, traveling and playing board games. He had a strong competitive streak, often excelling in athletic activities including tennis and skiing.
Stan is survived by his three daughters, Lora Hoagg, Stephanie Mulka (Steven Ball) and Stace
Visitation and service will be at Beck Funeral Home (229 N. 1st St., Rogers City, MI 49779) Saturday, August 10. Visitation will be from 9:30 -10 a.m. and a service at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
There will be a Celebration of Life held in Tucson in mid-October.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Arizona Land and Water Trust.
