The Rev. Barton Carlton Gray
The Rev. Barton Carlton Gray fell asleep in Jesus May 3, 2025. He was born to Richard and Gertrude Gray November 19, 1941 in Battle Creek. He was a loving husband for over 60 years to Laura (McCormick) Gray. Both he and Laura grew up in Battle Creek and married there. He was also a dear brother to Rodger (Patricia) Gray and a dear sister to the late Debora (Kevin) King.
He was a loving father to five children, Paul (Karla) Gray, Sarah (Greg) Schlicker, Timothy, John (Connie) Gray and Joel (Jennifer) Gray; loving grandfather to Nicholas (Alex)) Schlicker, Jared Gray, Eric (Sharon) Schlicker, Julia Gray, Lisa Gray, Margaret (Ben) Kontney, Jackie (Zach) Nelson, Janelle Gray, Thomas Gray and Mason Gray; and great-grandfather to Caroline Schlicker.
Pastor Gray served in active pastoral ministry for 48 years. After graduating from Concordia Theological Seminary In 1970 he served a South Dakota dual parish at Zion-Avon and St. John-Tyndall for five years. In 1975-1991 he served Missouri churches at Our Redeemer–Marshall and Peace-St. Louis. Then he returned to Michigan to serve at St. John-Pinconning and St. John-Rogers City (1991-2003.) After retiring to a home in Alpena, he was an interim pastor for periods of time at Holy Cross-Onaway, Trinity-Oscoda and Immanuel- Ossineke. In his whole ministry, he was loved for his faithful care to those who were hospitalized or nearing death. He also used his unique gifts well in teaching confirmation classes, leading youth groups and singing in various roles.
