Gregory “Greg” Nelson Tucker

Gregory “Greg” Nelson Tucker, 60, of Onaway, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 29, 2022. Born in Cheboygan September 13, 1961, Greg was the son of Cleo A. and Dorothy (Dymond) Tucker. He married Heather Patrice Mathieson October 15, 1988 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Onaway. A skilled carpenter, Greg worked over 20 years for New Dimensions Construction of Harbor Springs. A jack of all trades, he knew a little bit about a lot and would tackle just about any project.

Greg’s greatest passions were motorcycles, the great outdoors, and his family. For Greg, nothing felt quite like riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He loved the thrill of being one with his machine with the sights on every side and nothing between him and nature. He made long trips on his bike, of course, to Sturgis, South Dakota, to enjoy not only the sights, but the culture and camaraderie bikers have, as well as Montana, Wyoming and Tennessee.

Living most of his life in northern Michigan and spending a few years in Alaska, it’s no surprise that Greg was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He loved Michigan’s whitetail deer season but also enjoyed hunting antelope and mule deer out West and wild boar in Texas. During the winter he spent a lot of time on the ice, fishing walleye, pike, and sturgeon and in the spring when the smelt run, he could be found in a pair of waders standing in the icy water dippin’ for smelt. Greg had a great love for northern Michigan but the rugged wilderness of Alaska held a special place in his heart as well.

Most of all, Greg loved his family. He was especially close with his children, talking with them nearly every day and absolutely adored his grandchildren. He was a loving companion to Shelley and a supportive brother who could always be counted on. An early riser, Greg will be remembered as one who woke with sun and fell asleep in his chair each evening. He was fun-loving with a great sense of humor and a bit of a smart-ass. He was stubborn, had a wild side, and referred to himself as a “crazy b*****d!” With his big heart for helping others, Greg would help anyone, anytime. He was well-known in the community with many friends who he loved like family.

Greg will be sadly missed by his longtime companion, Shelley Madden of Onaway; sons, Christopher (Sarah) of Texas and Cleo (Danae Madden) of Onaway; daughters, Jaylene (Omar) Escobar of Pontiac and Patrice Tucker of Onaway; stepsons, Justin (Krista) Madden of Onaway and Brandon Madden of Trav

erse City; and 10 grandchildren, Ben, Harley, Jackson, Ally, Heather, Justin, Greyson, Harper, Adalynn and Colton. He also leaves his sisters, Rhonda (Mike) DeMaestri of Onaway, Arlene Newsted (Todd Brasseur) of Tower and Judy (Ken) Gribble of Anchorage, Alaska; brothers, Joe of Onaway and Ed of Alaska; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Greg was preceded in death by his wife, Heather October 28, 2003; a grandson, Aiden; a brother, Cleo R. Tucker; an infant brother; and his parents.

A Celebration of Life will be Friday, July 22, from 2 until 5 p.m. at Tower Hall. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Greg to his family to help with final expenses. Cremation arrangements were in care of Chagnon Funeral Home.
