George Alden Greene
George Alden Greene was born March 3, 1930, in Kalamazoo, son of George Harvey and Margaret Grace (VanDaff) Greene.
He graduated from Kalamazoo High School in 1948 and Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in June 1952. He married Mary Louise Falvey in December of 1952. They were married 52 years until her death in 2005.
They have three children, Molly (Rhoud) Benson of Presque Isle, Jeffrey (Tracy) Greene of Presque Isle and Julie Dierker of Point Place, Ohio.
George was called to active duty by the U.S. Naval Reserve and served as a dental technician from 1952-1954. He was a salesman for a major food company for 10 years before resigning to manage a houseware goods company with a warehouse in Toledo, Ohio using 10 trucks to service over 2,000 supermarkets in Michigan, Ohio and parts of Indiana. He resigned this position to be a regional sales manager for a housewares manufacturer responsible for sales in 26 states in the Midwest. After 10 years he had enough of constant travel, so he resigned from this position to start his own financial planning company called Family Financial Planning Inc. He continued this business until he gradually retired. George was always looking for fun and adventure his entire life and started boat racing while in high school and was an avid boater all his life. He fished and cruised Lake Erie for 20 years while living in Monroe County and fished and cruised Lake Huron for 20 more years after moving to Presque Isle. He made many weeklong boat trips to numerous islands in the North Channel. George rode motorcycles from age 30-91 and had many of them. George purchased an airplane in 1993 (age 63) and learned to fly! After becoming a licensed pilot, he and Mary flew all over the country from Alpena to Branson, Missouri, Denver Colorado, Leadville, Co. (El.9994 ft highest airport in the U.S.), Florida, Freeport Bahama, New York City up the Hudson River past the Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls and most of the airports in Michigan. George sold his airplane and hangar at age 87. In over 1,000 flying hours he never had an accident although there were a few times it became dangerous due to weather changes while in flight. He kept a Prindle sailboat and ice boat along with a stand-up jet ski at his son Jeff ’s house on Grand Lake and rode the Jet Ski until age 89. George also liked antique cars and restored a 1931 Chevy in 1958-59 and a 1931 Plymouth Coupe convertible in 1991-93.
